14TH WOOD-BO SHIELD TOURNAMENT

1. VENUE : Platberg Sports Centre – Harrismith

2. DATES : 16th to 18th May 2008

3. PROVISIONAL PROGRAM :

Friday, 16th May 12:00 - Men’s and Women’s Doubles
Tournament including finals and Plate finals
18:00 - Managers Meeting
19:00 - 1st Match Boden and Hardman Shield
Saturday, 17th May 09:00 - 1st Match Woodroffe and Joubert Shield
12:30 - 2nd Match Boden and Hardman Shield
16:00 - 2nd Match Woodroffe and Joubert Shield
19:30 - 3rd Match Boden and Hardman Shield
Sunday, 18th May 09:00 - 3rd Match Woodroffe and Joubert Shield
12:30 - Prize Giving

4. DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

Players are to enter with partners. If a partner is required, we will do our utmost to assist. There will be plate event for 1st round losers.

Special Note :- Players are requested to please support the Doubles Tournament and not just arrive in time for the 1st match on Friday evening or Saturday morning.

5. SCORING AND HANDICAPS

All matches in the individual championship and team events will be scored using the RALLY POINT SCORING SYSTEM with the following variations:



A. INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Players from the Woodroffe and Joubert Shield teams will be handicapped in order to encourage entries from the Boden Shield teams. The handicaps will also apply to the plate events. Each Woodroffe Shield player gets 0. Each Joubert Shield player gets 2 points and each Boden Shield player 4 points. The format will be on a knockout basis. All games will be one set of 30 points, change at 15, including the Championship finals and the Plate finals. There will be a 60 second break at the change over. There will be no setting at 29 all. Seeded players will umpire 1st round matches. Players will start with their handicapped scores. The scores will not be deducted from each other. The Hardman Shield Section will not play with the seniors. If there are enough juniors interested in playing, they will have their own mini tournament.

B. TEAM EVENTS

The first 2 sets will be to 21 points, with No setting at 20 all. Should a 3rd set be required it will be to 11 points, change sides at 6 with NO setting at 10 all.

6. COSTS

The cost per team that plays in the Woodroffe, Joubert and Boden Shield Sections is R 450-00. The cost for the Hardman Section is R 200-00 per team. The cost per player in the doubles is R 35-00 each.

7. SHUTTLES

Approved feather shuttles will be used. Plastic shuttles or 2nd hand feather shuttles may be used for all plate events except for the finals which will be played with new feather shuttles. The Juniors will play with plastic shuttles.

8. CLOSING DATE

We require confirmation by latest 30th April 2008 that your Association will in fact send teams to play in the tournament in the various sections as shown in clause 15. If a team withdraws after the above date, after originally confirming that they would in fact be playing, such team will then be liable for the team entry fee. Please note that this rule will apply and is not negotiable

9. ENTRIES

10. COLOURS ON COURT

This rule will be strictly enforced. Please inform your players accordingly.

11. FOOD AND DRINK

The normal range of hamburgers, hotdogs, toasted sandwiches, coffee, tea, cold drinks, beers, etc. will be on sale throughout the tournament. Anyone wanting other food will have to visit one of the Spur’s or Wimpy's.

12. FORMAT OF MATCHES

We will be using the 7 game system which comprises:- 1 Men’s Singles, 1 Women’s Singles, 2 Men’s Doubles, 2 Women’s Doubles and 1 Mixed Doubles. A team can comprise a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 men and women, the only problem here is that in a 3 man or 3 women team the singles player cannot play the mixed.

13. ACCOMMODATION

1. HARRISMITH INN (Bookings via Piet Meyer only: 083 652 9797)

A) Double Room : R 345-00 per room sharing
B) Service Levy : R 3-45 per room per night
C) Breakfast : R 55-00 per person

All prices include VAT.

2. HARRISMITH HALL

Players who wish to sleep in the hall will be able to do so free of charge, provided they bring their own bedding, mattresses, pillows, etc. Please bear in mind that Harrismith in May can be very cold at night (-3°C average). There are showers, toilets, etc. for abluting the next morning. Players who wish to stay in the hall must please confirm to Piet Meyer by latest 9th May 2008.

14. TROPHIES

Will all the teams and players who won trophies at the 2007 Tournament please ensure they are suitably engraved and brought to the Tournament. Failure to do so will result in the Province or the player having to pay a R 50-00 fine per trophy and for the costs to get the trophies to the new recipients.

We are again having 4 Junior teams competing in the Hardman Shield Section. The standard would be Under 15 strength. Please liaise with Emelda Botha (031 – 564 3439 (h) & (w)) for any queries as to the strength of the juniors. A junior team will comprise 4 boys and 4 girls and each junior will play 3 boys or girls doubles matches in a fixture. They will play 1 game to 21 points, change at 11 with NO setting at 20 all. They will play with plastic shuttles.

16. FINISHING

It must be clearly understood that once a winning score is reached in a match played on the Sunday morning, the Tournament Referee has the right to stop the match at that point. This will be done to try to ensure the prize giving function does not start too late. The Tournament Referee may, however, allow the match to continue if the result will influence finishing 2nd or 3rd. This will not happen if the result influences 3rd or 4th position.
